Why did you choose to open Le Garage in Bushwick?
We chose to open in Bushwick because we were looking for an underground cool neighborhood with accessible rent, and a sense of community. We looked in Crown Heights as well but chose Bushwick because it had the essence that we were looking for - an up and coming neighborhood, friendly neighbors and eclectic people that were open to try a new cuisine.
Our agent showed us our current space which previously had been used as a four car garage, before that it was a pigeon coupe! I have an interior architecture background. When I saw our space I saw a blank canvas and how I could transform it, making it modern yet maintaining the essence of the neighborhood.
My mother and I are partners in our business. She has worked in this industry most of her adult life and has experience opening restaurants in San Francisco and Paris. She was opening restaurants in San Francisco back in the 1970’s - picture San Francisco back in those years! We felt that we were ready to try a new challenge. Along with Le Garage, we are partners in two restaurants in Paris.
Our concept was to bring french bistro cuisine to the neighborhood. We want to be known for our amazing food; and we work closely with our chef to change our menu and cocktails seasonally.
We are a woman-owned and operated business, and most of our employees live in Bushwick. It is important to us to be part of, and invest in our neighborhood. We are very happy that we chose Bushwick.
Where do you see Bushwick in the future?
Sadly, I feel that we may be heading the Williamsburg route - large apartment buildings, multi-chain retail stores and larger corporate interests. We need to keep the essence of the neighborhood and people should support small local businesses.
Describe Bushwick in one word?
Eclectic - a place where people can really express themselves without the fear of being judged.
What is your favorite Bushwick hangout?
We like going to Three Diamond Door, Birdy’s and Op’s Pizza.
Any last words?
Tuesdays we have a prix fixed menu - $23.00.
Wednesday are all you can mussels and a glass of wine - $25.00.
Thursday is crepe night - sweet or savory.
We have been open three and half years.
Dogs and cats are welcome in our terrace (because we’re in Bushwick and people like to walk their cats on a leash).
We love being in Bushwick.
