Unique. Inspiring. Modern. Vibrant. Playful.
I grew up in Detroit but I moved to New York in 2013. My mom would always take me to read magazines in Barnes and Noble. I’d have a huge stack of fashion magazines. Reading Teen Vogue, and to now have an article in there, is an amazing way to inspire the next generation of artists and to be recognized for my artwork.
I’ve been doing art since I was 4. First, painting with acrylic paints, drawing and watercolors. In high school, I did a lot of different mediums, going to every single art class I could take. I went to college for fashion merchandising and got a minor in fine art. My friend owned a magazine in Detroit. He was hiring me to do portraits, and they were doing this story on Aretha Franklin who had a new album coming out. She didn’t want to be photographed, so I did her portrait instead, using a photograph as a reference.
I once did a painting of Prince and he retweeted it and put it on his Instagram. My art was also shown in ‘The Times of Bill Cunningham’ that premiered at The Lincoln Center, showcasing the New York Times photographer. It was my first time having my art in a movie which was an honor. Right now, I’m working on getting more events together with a program called “Today at Apple”. It spotlights artists, musicians, and dancers. So far, I’ve done three shows with Apple. Ipad portrait, fashion illustration, and teaching how to do ipad paintings to a group of kids from The University of Texas that were here for a summer program.
My advice for new artists would be don’t give up, you’re going to hear a lot of “no”. It’s very important to network and build connections with people.
I’ve also studied other artists’ careers. I’m mostly inspired by Andy Warhol - people who did portrait art or celebrity paintings. Architecture inspires me. African American artists inspire me. In Bushwick - the culture, the murals, the cafes, all inspire me to create art here.
If you are an aspiring artist or a supporter and would like to attend one of Jeremy’s shows, you can find upcoming events here: apple.com/today
