Where are you from Donny?
I am from Denver, Colorado and have lived in Bushwick for two years.
When did you start the We Are Creative Cog?
We Are Creative Cog was founded at 191 Knickerbocker restaurant in June of 2019.
I met the owners Rona and Jesse through my friend, Shari, who told me they were looking for someone to provide entertainment for their wonderful Bushwick patrons. After that meeting (and eating one the best burgers I’ve ever had), it was clear that this would be the place to harness a new creative community, so Thursday night became the Creative Cog Open Mic night.
Each week I’d haul my audio gear there and set it up, and each week there would be more people wanting to perform. Musicians, poets, storytellers, and more from all walks of life would come to perform their stories and songs. In 9 months, we had become a community held together by each other's unique talents and open hearts.
Then there was Covid-19.
When did you decide to take your show online?
By April 2020, when it had been almost a month since the last in-person open mic, I knew I had to find a way to bring the Creative Cog Open Mic together. Though I didn't know much about social media, I learned how to live stream our Open Mic on Instagram. I contacted everyone via the email sign up list, and by the end of April, I was hosting two Open Mics every Thursday, one at 7:45PM broadcasted @wearecreativecog and another at 9:00PM broadcasted @thisbuchwicklife.
While the live streams have been a source of motivation to stay creative every week, we are all still hoping to meet and perform for each other in person soon. We Are Creative Cog.
How can you sign up to perform in one of your live shows?
